Black screensaver

In Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, Apple introduced the ability to use any Quartz Composition (easily created with Quartz Composer) as a screensaver. Personally, I use the screensaver solely as a security measure, so that if I step away from my machine for more than a few minutes, the screensaver kicks on and a password is required to get back access to the computer.

Consequently, I need as simple of a screensaver as possible, one that will use no CPU and tax the display to the minimum. The result is my black screensaver, which simply draws a solid, black background over the entire screen. The are no options to configure, no special installation.

To install the screen saver, simply download the the ZIPed screensaver, extract the archive, and place the file Black.qtz in either ~/Library/Screen Savers (if you want to install only for yourself) or /Library/Screen Savers (if you want to install for all users).

Enjoy!
